Georgina Spring Fling organizers add full distance marathon to their Saturday, May 6th race to give runners an early season Boston Qualifier.

Runners looking for an early season marathon now have another Boston Qualifying course to consider. The Georgina Spring Fling, which began in 2022 with a 5k, 10k and 21.1k distance will add the full marathon to the May 6, 2023 event.

“With the recent decision to drop the full marathon from the Mississauga race, we recognized runners were looking for alternatives,” says co-race director Sandie Orlando. “Our marathon course is certified and does two loops of the half marathon course, so we realized we could easily add the full distance to fill the gap.”

The Georgina Marathon was created by Cindy Lewis-Caballero and Sandie Orlando in 2021 in response to the closure of most races during the Covid lockdowns. The fast, flat, and scenic course runs along the shores of Lake Simcoe and has already proven to result in one of the highest percentages of Boston Qualifiers to registrations and personal bests.

After a successful inaugural race, the Spring Fling was introduced to attract a broader audience of runners that weren’t ready to take on the longer distances. The family-friendly event welcomes runners and walkers to De La Salle Park which is only 45 minutes north of the GTA.

“Many runners like the community vibe of our event, so we were getting lots of encouragement to add the full distance to our spring race,” says Cindy. “Fortunately, because we are a growing event, we could respond quickly to this opportunity.”

The town of Georgina and the Briars Resort continue to be supportive of bringing the race to Georgina. While a presenting sponsor for the Spring Fling has not been named, the organizers are hoping to work with local businesses to continue building awareness of what the region has to offer.

Charities supported by both races are the Georgina Community Food Pantry and Sandgate Women’s Shelter.
